Cooley Peninsula

This is the land of myth and legend, history and pre-history. The hunter-gatherers were at Narrow Water more than 8000 years ago; Cúchulainn dogged Queen Medhbh's army as she searched for the Brown Bull; Vikings dominated the Lough for 150 years; and the Normans arrived in force in the late 1100s.

Ballagan to Lordship

If you like walking

If you like strolling on spectacular shingle beaches, start at Ballagan Point and follow the shoreline towards historic Whitestown, where President Joe Biden's people come from.  Or walk west from Gyles Quay towards Lordship looking for flat pebbles for perfect skimming. In between are the hidden treasures, the sheltered sandy beaches at Templetown and Shelling Hill

Cooley Mountains

The Cooley Mountains are uniquely accessible. It may look like wilderness but there are few places where you can get much more than a mile away from a road. With a few sensible precautions they are comparatively safe. The main long-distance hiking route is the 26-km Táin Trail, but the less experienced may like to begin with the Poc Fada route from Annaverna or a section of the Táin route above the Lumpers Pub in Ballymakellett
