Carlingford

People say we're just about an hour from nearly anywhere. Each season has something different to offer and for many people, that offers the opportunity to come several times a year, and enjoy distinctly different experiences. Zip-wires in the spring, forest walks and mountain passes in the high summer, and back for stout and oysters by the fireside before Christmas.

Carlingford is the creation of Hugh de Lacy, who built the castle at the very end of the 12th century. The village which grew up around it eventually needed a wall to keep the O'Hanlon tribe out. It probably had several tower houses; There may have been one at the Tholsel, which was a customs station for goods landed by ship when the waves lapped against Taaffe's Castle.

The History & Heritage

The Tholsel was once the town jail: the car park beside it was the Fair Green where men of military age were required by law to practise archery for two hours after Sunday Mass. The priory was built around 1305 and destroyed by the Scottish army of Edward Bruce ten years later.  The Taaffe family lost their castle and their land when they backed the wrong side at the Battle of the Boyne. You can't escape from history in Carlingford: you don't need lessons because it is all around and you are standing beside it or on top of it. Our mission is to protect and enhance the fabric of our medieval village for coming generations to visit and enjoy
